7 Quick Takes on a Big Week

Kelly and co have the best wrap-up of their weeks so I’m hopping over to add my very small $.02.


Our oldest started school! I survived! He loved it! I stopped crying! I almost remembered everything (signed slips, lunches, water bottle) every day. And we all hoofed it over there each morning, full dressed. The dressed part felt like a real accomplishment. He said he had a “great” time at pickup each day so I think it’s a good start to the year.


The younger two are trying to figure out the meaning of life without their captain around telling them what to do. It’s been tricky. So far they’ve emptied the garbage, filled the garbage, cut up lots of little pieces of paper, made weapons out of thin air, and waxed poetic about their tyrannical missing sibling. Suddenly no one remembers the summer of bickering and instead hold only sweet sweet memories.

Oh, to be a kid.


I’m bursting with home improvement ideas I want to do before it’s winter and the baby comes. I’m not so sure AA wants to do any of them. I keep adding to the list. We’ll see what actually gets accomplished. Making my closet into a nursery (hey, it has a window and door, so . . . ), painting the bathroom that I painted lavender the last pregnancy and suddenly have a severe aversion to, all the closets! The attic! everything!


Which do you like better? These? Or these? I’m thinking of pseudo fall and just think both are beyond my norm.

Britt is one of my favorite blogging friends. She writes consistently and beautifully. She wrote about their homeschool starting this year and I just loved it.


I’m trying to not eat dessert every day so this pregnancy doesn’t add 45+ pounds again. The struggle is real. What’s your trick to not eating ice cream during the day??? Salted almonds are helping as a snack but ugh. I need help!

    Pretzel crisps, popped corn chips, naked juice in all varieties (I buy at least 3 every grocery run), carnation protein shakes.

    I just bought some raw pecans, tossed in a little coconut oil and cinnamon, and baked at 350 for 10ish minutes. Mmmmm!

    My number one (read “most consistent”) way to not eat snacks is to not have them in the house. If it’s here, I WILL eat it and pretty much no amount of self-control can help….
    My second way is to have a piece of toast with jelly (nice bread and nice homemade jelly). *Mostly* satisfies the sweet craving without getting too carried away. πŸ™‚

    I ate a LOT of watermelon when I was pregnant, which helps you stay hydrated and has vitamins so not a terrible choice, but not very filling. How about some slightly sweetened Greek yogurt? Mix with honey and fruit or a tablespoon of jam; has more protein and less sugar than ice cream but still yummy. I also agree with Ruth Anne, toasted bread or bagels with butter and jam were (and still are) some of my favorite snacks. I also vote for the Sanita shoes, but only because my dad has a pair of the Hawaiian ones πŸ˜‰ Congrats on getting through the first week of school and good luck on those projects!

    I’ve been eating a lot of Oikos greek yogurt lately which is like zero sugar and mucho protein. But I am not pregnant, and it is not ice-cream. So, as long as you don’t imagine ice cream…quite serviceable.

    Oh, I had to chuckle with #3. For some reason, I didn’t really allow myself any projects in the first year after we moved here. It has been hard enough keeping up with housework and monthly guests and such. But since this baby came on the scene, I’ve had endless lists of projects that I Must Get Done. I burst into tears when I got up from a nap today and found that my husband had come home for lunch and helped himself to a snack and not put things back away, and I spent the morning getting ready for and cleaning up after the installation of the new fridge and my sewing project is lying neglected on the ironing board and I finally figured out how I want to rearrange the spare room and I still need to deep clean the front closet and there’s so much laundry and I can’t do all the things today and now I have to put the nuts back on the shelf too! Ha. I try to be more reasonable. But seriously, I never got the nesting bug this hard with Maria!

      I love the hormonal sobs when my husband doesn’t do what I WANT HIM TO RIGHT NOW hahaha. You have some seriously strong nesting vibes and I love it!

    Courtesy of my Bradley childbirth classes and the chart to keep track of ALL the food I ate and protein I consumed, to be given to my teacher each week, I felt so self-conscious every time I ate ice cream while pregnant (which was frequent!) so I made sure to add as much health value as possible. If I wanted ice cream, I would get a leetle bit of ice cream and then add in peanuts & bananas to make a sundae-type dish that filled me up, was tasty, and somewhat healthy. I was also a huge fan of snacking on popcorn (peanut butter popcorn on occasion) and Greek yogurt. And fresh fruit and granola. And sometimes frozen bananas could be ALMOST as good as having ice cream (although they don’t come super close). Mainly, though, we didn’t keep ice cream in the house that often, because if it was in the freezer, I’d eat it.

      That is hilarious–accountability would kill my ice cream vibe too. My midwife is a close friend and over for dinner the other day. I declined ice cream in front of her–and then confessed I’d already had a day-time cone!!

      Frozen bananas: smart.

    I’m pretty sure I used to have the Jesus sandals and they were epically comfortable. The others a bit more aesthetically pleasing maybe. I can’t offer advice on how not to eat ice cream. I didn’t know people tried that.

    Ice cream is soooo good when pregnant! But definitely one I need to avoid as well or I gain too much weight. I’ve found this time around(I’m on #4 too) that if I eat enough fresh fruit & protein during the day, I’m not even hungry for any ice cream at night. For me, the trick is curbing my craving for something sweet with a healthy something sweet. Who says I can’t eat a whole package of strawberries in one day? Or a bunch of grapes. I feel like sometimes we forget that fruit is good for us! Definitely better than sugar. Also, canned pinapple(in pinapple juice). It makes that sugar craving go away right away. πŸ™‚

    Fresh fruit! Or canned pinapple(with pinapple juice). Ice cream is so easy to indulge on while pregnant but I have the same problem, I gain all the weight if I don’t watch what I eat. I’m on number 4 right now & still breastfeeding & my body doesn’t lose the extra weight until I wean, so I’ll likely be stuck at a higher weight my whole pregnancy. I plan on avoiding actual sugar as much as possible & only eating fruit when I crave something sweet. I also find that if I eat enough protein & fresh fruit during the day, I’m not as hungry to snack at night. I think fruit is always a good go to. You can’t go wrong πŸ™‚

    I liked Greek yogurt with fruit, or just a bowl of fresh fruit, or frozen fruit (grapes and blueberries are my favs). And I hear you on turning your closet into a nursery. My closet is ginormous (for a closet), has a window and door and could totally be a very small office (add a desk!) or a nursery (add a crib). πŸ™‚
