beautiful woodwork & a makeover of our Master Suite {gift for you to win}

of thistle & thyme giveawayKelly.

This sweet girlfriend of mine.

Kelly

We were roommates at The Hundred Event this summer. I was so delighted to get to know her over the weekend–including a really hilarious trip to Whole Foods that involved buying a pair (my first!) of TOMS shoes. But the best part was talking about our kids and the life of small children and artisan work. I felt a real kinship with her and was so tickled when she agreed to run a giveaway to credit for her shoppe.

Oh, did I not tell you about Of Thistle & Thyme yet? Let’s talk about her shoppe.

off

She and her husband hand craft botanical all hangings–wood burnt into high quality wood!!

It starts with an inspiring illustration from early botanists. True vintage artwork. Then from her imagination, these take form in their woodshop where they cut, sand, draw, wood burn, and finish with teak oil–each piece by hand.

So she literally draws out these vintage botany prints onto her wood panels. And then burns them into the wood. And then puts a stain//or not and then the oil. Talk about a labor of love!!

Some are the natural pine stain, others are deeper in tone. I asked Kelly to help me create a deep rich feel for our sitting room. Our house is 100 years old this year (hbd, house) and was featured on Design Mom earlier this year. It’s all gorgeous hand carved woodwork. Naturally, her work fits right in around here.

Her description from her etsy shoppe:

Of Thistle & Thyme creates wood burned botanical wall hangings originating from the vintage prints of early botanists. We’re a husband and wife team with two little ones and we love to learn new trades and create what we can in the mean time. Our wall hangings are each made by hand in the foothills of Northwest Arkansas.

Our shop was born from a simple project meant to decorate the bare walls of our new home. Inspired by vintage, botanicals, and nature, we created a product that nods to the past and yet feels relevant to modern day decor. Each piece we make is unique, and we’ve made sure there’s something to fit every style be it eclectic, modern, whimsical, simplistic or traditional.

Our work is comprised of wood burned pine boards that are finished with Teak Oil. As no two wood grains are the same, each and every piece is unique. We take careful note of how each print compliments the natural flow of the wood’s grain to ensure a beautiful aesthetic. We also have a variety of wood stains and on occasion are known to fill in a print with gold leaf paint for a little extra sparkle.

And here’s the funny part. Our house is so wonderful and has so much character, but the second floor has undergone many phases of makeover since we bought it from my mom five years ago. The kids’ rooms were redone, the guest room too, the main bath, and lastly I’ve been eyeing our Master Suite.

It has two large rooms, one with a fireplace! and the other with four foot windows on three sides, and a beautifully finished bath. The sitting room & bedroom, though! It’s been such a challenge to figure out how to actually arrange our hodgepodge of hand-me-down, handmade, new, and found furniture in a pleasing way.

bedroom

In the winter we swap the bedroom into the other room with the fireplace, but in the summer, these windows are glorious. As is our kingsized bed. Cannot strongly recommend it enough. Worth its weight, and its weight in gold.

The sitting room looks a little different now that our bed is in the other room–another post on that makeover!–and I’m struggling with this couch. Because. Well.

couch

It’s my aunt’s and she very generously gave it to us when she downsized. I love the details and the wood carving. But I am needing something fresh. The floral is getting to me. Like how those books are stacked so neatly? Because that is always how we roll. #notnotnot

I tried new pillows. Some I already had.

couch

Nope. They look terrible. BUT LOOK WHAT’S ON THE WALL???!!!!!!!!!!

Just not sure what to do and not do with this couch situation. I really wish Katy the interior designer whiz lived nearby and could rescue me. The detailing on the couch is really lovely. I just need a break from the cream & floral. I tried throwing a Pendleton Wool blanket on there. Nope. Looked like a college dorm room.

Regardless, Kelly’s beautiful art is the start of changing up our Master Suite. She’s the impetus & kick off for having high quality wall hangings and actually shaping the space around them.

How can you not love this? Look at the details. Each is truly a work of art.

So now on to the good stuff for you. Visit her shoppe & comment back with your fav piece. And a few other entries on rafflecopter. But that’s the biggest one. Winner gets 50 buckaroos credit to her etsy shoppe.
