7 Ways to Look & Feel Your Best {when you’re not your best}

June 4, 2015

I’m not at my best. I look in the mirror and see the little kisses under my eyes called cosleepernumber3 and guiltily gave up sugar again as I was abusing it//turning to it for an afternoon pick up instead of a healthy snack//my clothing doesn’t fit like I’d like it to. But I can’t wait around for life to suddenly hand me a week of full-nights sleep, a personal trainer, and a chef. Instead, I’m determined to feel my best that I can be right now. And here are my seven areas of life that help me look & feel like I’m still rocking it. Wrinkles be d@mned. warning: selfies taken in the kids’ bathroom. Nell making solemn & goofy faces at herself. Again. Sorry. H A I R My hair needs to be colored. Sorry, ladies, I tried to go ombre. I tried to go natural. I hate the brown. I have lots of postpartum thick hair (hasn’t fallen out yet, except on the fringy sides) and want it to at least be blonde at the roots, even if it’s not going to be brushed or styled. So cheerfully I went to my hairdresser to “remind” it of its blonde roots, literally & figuratively. I can find ways to creatively make my hair look decent without much time & effort. Do you follow Kate on instagram? Because she has hair tutorials that are amaaaaaazing. Do something with your hair that makes you feel put together. Even when you’re coming undone. C L O…

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig

April 8, 2015

Happy Easter! We’re back in the saddle here in Saint Paul after a whirlwind ten days on the East Coast. Overall, I’d say we traveled well. The kids had their moments of glory and moments of dolphin-like high-pitched protest screeches. You know. But the other adults & family we visited were amazing without any of those shrill sounds, surprisingly! Find me over at Blessed is She this week, Fumbling Towards Grace, and The Fisk Files. Sorry I’ve been kinda absent. Getting back in the groove of life back home.  Nunu. She was my travel guru. Ready to prove her grandmotherly travel skills of shushing and soothing the baby, stern looks and sweet snuggles with the tantrum-filled toddler, along with hand-holding and whining-whispering the pre-k’er, she did it all. No one can keep up with her pace of walking with this double stroller that saved our bacon. We could never have navigated the airports, parks, and long stretches of sidewalk walking without it. Good thing she remembered to bring it. Tia KK. She is the ultimate auntie. Devoted to her nieces and nephews, she’s always ready to sing them a new song, play a freshly made-up game, or distract them from their deep distress over sharing. She saved all of us from even more crying my taking the saddest child in the room away to love them up. Cannot travel without her. Period. Tia B. My oldest sister runs the computery stuff for a really amazing international film/show streaming web service (think better than Netflix) called Drama…

drink it like it’s hot

November 6, 2014

If you know me, and you do, oh, yes, you do, you know I love hot beverages. I’m a poser. This is a rambling post. Brace yourselves. Teething has rendered me virtually brainless. Hop to Olivia’s blog for the last moments of giving away a Bandit Bib. Because: teething. I’m going to point you to my top teething solutions. Hop here. The advantage of a blog spanning multiple teething children. Right-o. But on to me. I love hot chocolate. Above all else. I will drink it to death, if on a dessert island. I could have multiple a day til my kidneys failed me. I could never ever go full non-dairy and non-chocolate because this is my life blood. When I was a little girl I would order chocolate milk at any given opportunity at a restaurant–which wasn’t that often. I just love love love chocolate in liquid form. BUT I also have grown begrudgingly fond of my sister’s tea. If you recall, out of us five kids, only one is really doing interesting things, Bridget. Okay, but Molly is a close second. Bridget {wave wave wave} is remarkable. And if you ask my mom what she does for a living, she will give you a quizzical look and pause, long, before responding something with computers . . . ? Actually, the sister between them is the most giving and selfless, and my brother is serving our country, so it really just leaves me doing the boring stuff. Like talking about tea and cocoa.…

5 Favorites ##linking with Jenna & girls

October 28, 2014

So party people. Five FAVORITES IS BACK! Jenna over at Call Her Happy is hosting. Basically this means you write a blog post about five favorite things happening around the web or products or whatever. Then you link it up with Jenna! It’s such a fun way to hear from your friends and trusted e-companions what’s the haps. What’s on the scene. For those of us living under a rock . . . or in our husband’s bathrobe and slippies– that last word an ode to number 2. 1) Rosehip Seed Oil My sister Molly’s organic skincare line. Omgaaaash. I use it everyday. As do my kids. And my husband. And my mom. And dad. And about half of the continent of Asia as they’re super popular over there. This business is booming and very in demand because people love high quality organic skincare that actually works. No snake oil here. Right now I’m in love with her rosehip seed oil. I use it daily on SweetPea’s dry face and my own wrinkling aging face. Yes. I’m aging, remember?? Molly explains it here. And sells it here. Buy. Slather. Smell nice. 2) Arrested Development   I don’t even have to watch it. I’ve seen the whole series so many times. We quote it to each other every single day. Yes. Sometimes it is my only humor for the day. If you somehow were living under a rock and missed this, what are you waiting for? 3) Everyday Sacrament: the Messy Grace of Parenting by my dear e-friend,…

NEW MAMA gift set up for grabs {grab it!}

October 19, 2014

Because I’ve had three babies and I know what I needed afterwards . . . I present to you the NEW MAMA gift set! I give you the tour, from the bottom to the top: Witch Hazel Spray I told you about my sister Molly and her organic skincare products before, remember? A distillation of Witch Hazel leaves and bark infused with Organic Lavender buds and Rose Petals to provide superb herbal comfort. ((giving away the bigger one!)) Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) has been used for many centuries as an astringent and general body toner. This amazing formula takes it one step further, tincturing Organic Lavender buds and Rose Petals to provide even more herbal goodness. Each batch is tinctured separately and macerated for at least 6 weeks in the shade. Saturate cotton pads with witch hazel to soothe tired eyes. It has also traditionally been used to relieve hemorrhoids (Amazing!) and varicose veins. Visit her on the web or etsy or in her shoppe in Brooklyn! Lactation Consultation I told you about my friend Leah and her Guiding Star Project before, remember? She’s an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and is donating either one hour online lactation consultation via Google Helpouts (Value $55) or a one hour Phone Consultation (value $35). Because new mamas often need a little professional help (or for me with my second a LOTTA help for cracked//bleeding//screaming pained nipples) with nursing. IBCLCs help with the management of diverse lactation issues. They can help answer simple questions related to…

Greasy Hair Help

September 21, 2014

Oh, no, I wasn’t offering any. I was asking for help with my greasy hair. Often times I don’t have time to wash my hair. I have loads and yards of it and when I’m taking a bath at midnight {ME TIME!} or with the kids {THEM TIME!} I don’t want to stick my head awkwardly under the faucet and wash. So it can go a week+ and look pretty grease ball. Or maybe it’s okay? Humor me. No. Don’t. It’s greasy. Looking. My girlfriend Natalia over at Ma Nouvelle Mode has a youtube channel with hair help. She’s very very helpful!! And Katie at Wellness Mama has homemade natural shampoo, too. If you have darker hair, I think you can pull of the no shampoo forever and it doesn’t look greasy look. My sister Molly has! She alleges her husband didn’t even notice she hadn’t shampooed. Aron, is this true? But back to me and my make believe blonde–I mean reminding my hair follicles of the color God wanted them. What do I do with greasy hair when I have to go to a party (above pictured), or church (imagine this ^^ dress with a shrug), or a date ^^. ?? Do you like the kids’ bath toys in the background? Me too. Help a girlfriend out. That’s me.
